DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The St. Charles Heart & Lung Specialists clinic contains the subspecialties of Non-invasive Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Structural Heart. Together, these specialists deliver a complete patient centered program of care for patients with cardiac conditions. The program delivers care in the outpatient setting throughout Central Oregon and inpatient hospital care at the St. Charles Bend campus.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Perfusionist is a highly trained member of the cardiac surgery program responsible for the operation of the heart-lung bypass machine. The perfusionist employs highly technical, mechanical, and electronic devices which monitor, support, or replace the functions of the patient's cardiovascular and/or pulmonary systems. The perfusionist also operates devices used for autologous blood transfusion in the operating rooms and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to assist in the monitoring and ongoing operations of the perfusion function in Cardiothoracic surgery

Work schedule: Full time Cardiac Perfusionist shall complete a minimum of 172 clinical shifts per year.

Call expectation: Cardiac Perfusionist will participate in the cardiac perfusion call rotation, which is assigned based upon the schedule rotation. Cardiac Perfusion on call will support cardiac surgery, including TAVR standby needs daily and provider urgent/emergent perfusion case coverage overnight in alignment with activation of the Cardiothoracic surgery team.

Work location: Physician's primary clinic work location is St. Charles Bend Hospital

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned)

Clinical Expectations:

• Operate heart-lung bypass machine to achieve total bypass, coronary perfusion, circulatory assist, partial bypass, hypothermic perfusion, respiratory assist or regional perfusion.
• Perform physiological measurements of hemodynamic functions.
• Control anticoagulation as required for cardiopulmonary bypass and other life support devices.
• Perform, operate, and transfer intra-aortic balloon pump, autologous blood salvaging systems (cell saver).
• Utilize monitoring systems and related equipment
• Perform flow studies.
• Modify current equipment or use new equipment circuitry and techniques to meet patient needs.
• Confer with cardiac surgeons to become acquainted with nature of surgery and gather information to be used during set-up procedures of heart-lung bypass machine.
• Coordinate blood requirements for cardiac surgery schedule with the Blood Bank.
• Assist in maintaining inventory parts for heart-lung bypass machine operation and maintenance.
• Process patient care orders using the electronic medical record.
• Actively promote patient safety and quality of patient care.
• Display consistent proficiency when communicating with patients, visitors, physicians, peers, managers, volunteers, internal and external customers.
• Participates in new colleague on-boarding and ongoing mentorship for the perfusionist team.
• Participate in data collection for quality outcomes as it relates to perfusion services. Collaborate in quality initiatives related to CT surgery.
• Performs other duties as assigned as it relates to both clinical and administrative responsibilities. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.

Administrative Expectations:

• Document all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
• Be familiar with the SCHS organization structure.
• Participate in SCMG physicians' meetings and assist in policy formation for SCMG and Physician's practice.
• Keep medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity. Must attest to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction.
• Keep all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted.
• Maintain active privileges at St. Charles Health System hospitals sufficient to permit performance of job duties.

EDUCATION

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

• Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular Certified or certification-eligible as per guidelines of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion

• Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required.

• Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies.

• Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification.

• Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required:

• Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion

• Valid driver's license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.

• Current BLS certification required.

• Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS Inpatient locations.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

• Experienced in cardiac hospital providing cardiac perfusion care.

• Experience coordinating complex patient care

• Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System.

• Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results.

Preferred:

• 2+ years' experience cardiac perfusion

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

• Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
