PRISM (Pulmonary Research Infrastructure for Shared Resources and Mentorship) - The Pulmonary Division serves a broad range of clinicians, scientists and educators, many of whom want to or are actively engaged in translational and clinical research. PRISM provides full-service outpatient research capabilities to our faculty with content knowledge in pulmonary medicine. In doing so, PRISM will lower the bar to entry in clinical research and facilitate high quality, efficient and impactful research. Our present focus is on outpatient pulmonary trials at The Vanderbilt Lung Institute (VLI). It is our mission to deliver world-class clinical care to patients with allergic diseases, pulmonary conditions, and critical illness through employing a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach, develop cutting-edge, patient-focused research that extends from basic discoveries to clinical implementation, and provide state-of-the-art education and training to inspire and nurture the next generation of leaders in allergy and immunology, pulmonary medicine, and critical care.
Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans were exposed to several potentially dangerous inhaled substances during deployment and many developed respiratory problems during and after military service. Our research group is working to better understand how deployment-related exposures cause lung disease, define long-term outcomes in exposed individuals, and develop sensitive and non-invasive ways of diagnosing lung disease in this population. This particular study will collect data on healthy, asymptomatic patients to allow us to evaluate novel ways of diagnosing lung disease in soldiers.
